Wow, doing the mysterious Spider-Woman thing was quite natural for local Siren Kayla! We had amazing fun doing this with her so enjoy the results and watch out for this new talent!
1) Can you tell us when did you decide to try modeling and what made you interested in it?
I’ve been modeling since I was sixteen years old. It was just for fun; a hobby that I took up with a very close friend of mine. In essence, I consider myself an artist and a poet; modeling is a method for me to partake in the art of others; to inspire others and constantly recreate myself. When I became a CEGEP student, I started modeling more often and I realized that I have the professional and creative energy to pursue this as a career. I find it rewarding and challenging. I feel spiritually connected with myself and everything around me when I model, because I become fully conscious of body, my emotions and the space around me. Alternative modeling is a wonderful way to promote healthy ideals of beauty and appreciate alternative outlooks instead of stereotypical beauty.
2) What are the main themes that you would like to explore in future photo work?
It’s all up in the air. I’m really open-minded. I could model for simple things such as perfume brands, clothing brands, etc. Modeling for album art would be really awesome. I like vintage inspired photo shoots (1920’s, 19’50’s), gothic/Victorian concepts, otherworldly/fairytale concepts. Modeling on the catwalk might be something I’d like to explore. I like the weird and the fantastic.
3) Are there any models that inspire you, or even photographers that you admire?
More often musicians inspire me: Amanda Palmer, Emily Haines, Porcelain and the Tramps, Angelspit, Lady Gaga. Iconic figures: Marilyn Monroe, Dita Von Teese. Mythical creatures: mermaids, vampires, etc.
4) Is there something that frustrates you regarding the general public’s view on alternative models? And how do you view classic “mainstream” modeling?
There are so many strict requirements and that can be a little overwhelming. I think it’s more important to have a professional attitude and a creative mind than it is to be at least 5"’7'.
5) Tell us a bit about your passion for literature… do you have any favourite styles or authors, and do you write a lot yourself?
I write a lot of free-verse poetry and I aspire to publish an anthology of poetry and also a novel. I’m working on both at the moment. I like Pablo Neruda, Douglas Coupland, Carlos Zuif Zafon and also some 19th, 20th century literature. I like satirical writing. I like reading to laugh; but nothing simple and slapstick. Reading is comforting to me. Writing is an emotional outlet. If I wasn’t able to write, I would feel empty.
6) You recently became the proud owner of your first tattoo! What can you tell us about this and will there any more work planned for the future?
A very close friend of mine kissed a piece of paper and I used that for my tattoo, so it’s actually her mouth on my lips. Essentially, it’s a comforting reminder that many people love me and I’m never really alone. I’d like to eventually get a full sleeve tattoo and my entire back done.
7) Did you ever went out at a fetish event… or is this something that could be intriguing for you to do in the future?
Fetish events are completely unknown territory but I’d like to go to a few and experience the atmosphere and culture. I have a thing for PVC, anyways. Ha.
8) What do you think your degree of comfort will be when the time comes to pose with other model(s)?
I look forward to it. Maybe the other model with mirror my differences and we can complement each other’s features. Or maybe we can do some role-play and tell a story. I’m not sure what to expect but I’ve always wanted to work with other models. It would give me a chance to learn from them.
9) Do you prefer to go on photo shoots with precise themes well planned in advance or on some that are more on the improvisational style?
I at least like knowing general concepts and general themes I’d be dealing with.
10) Do you find time to relax? What are your favourite things to do when you’re not on any assignments, or at school or at work?
Socializing with friends, drinking at the bar, painting, writing poetry, reading, playing video games, watching movies, shopping at second hand stores, etc.
11) As we witnessed, you seemed very proud to become a Siren! So… what can we do for you now? LOL
I’d like to get a modeling contract. It seems almost impossible but I’d love to be able to. I need to practice and also I need to really advertise myself. But I need help. I suppose I just want some nurturing from people who understand how the business works.
