1) What can you tell us about your background?
Outer space
2) So were you a model before becoming a designer or is the other way around?
I just kind of fell into pinup first- but when i was a teen I used to sketch outfits and dabbled in design so I stuck to my roots when I chose a career in fashion. :)
3) What’s the entire process when you get an idea in your head for a new design to the point that you hold the final piece in your hands?
It used to be different when I sewed and designed clothes - but the process in having a t-shirt in your hands is much easier, and I hate sewing! But basically my little brain conjurs up something, then I describe it to a graphic designer, then I order tops and get them screen printed. THEN VOILA! Way easier and more stress free!
4) How would you describe the alternative fashion industry & modeling scene in Edmonton?
The alternative fashion industry is definitely improving in Edmonton. I think alternative is becoming more and more mainstream all the time which is awesome. As far as the alt modeling scene, it's kinda scary cause everyone is a model and so many girls call themselves models and they have never even been published or really done any work. I don't call myself a model ( I prefer 'pinup') cause I look at all the hot alt girls from around the world with tons of covers, tear sheets, and company work and I call them models! Just because you have had your pic taken with a professional camera doesn't mean you're a model. My own personal opinion. :D
5) What can you tell us about Nervosa Clothing?
Nervosa clothing was created to embrace individuality and quirkiness. As humans we are weird and have our own little idiosyncrasies which is just awesome! Nervosa donates money to mental health charities from every sale and believes in raising mental health awareness. As someone who suffers from mental illness I find it's something a lot of us (including myself in the past) are ashamed of it and it's kind of taboo still, which isn't cool. I am trying to glamorize it and make it more like a VIP club than a neuro chemical deficiency. It's a tough go but we need to talk and be more open about it. It's no different than diabetes and other physical ailments, you know?
6) What were your cultural inspirations when starting out and what inspire you still?
Definitely the '50s.... and now I am a little more inspired by celebrity misfits. Typical I know.
7) What would you say is the biggest misconception from the public eye towards alternative models?
It's so annoying but people think alt models are whores or are always looking for a good time. People have misconceptions about ALT GIRLS PERIOD! Just because we have tattoos doesn't mean we all like group gang bangs! I personally dont understand the association!. This isn't the day and age where it was inappropriate and indecent to wear a t-shirt or pants! When I used to write alt porn reviews, I understood why people made assumptions about me - but not now when I'm not tied to adult work! jeez!
8) You seem to have fun posing with other girls... what’s your degree of comfort when working with other models?
I love women! They make the best friends ever! The bonds that I have with other women are like no other! I try to treat my boyfriend like a girl sometimes by chatting on the phone or shopping and he gets so uncomfortable and does the worst job ever. But yeah my limits haven't been pushed yet so I don't know?
9) Are you attracted to more fetish fabrics like leather, rubber, latex?
I love leather and pvc. Gotta throw studs/spikes and denim in there though. I don't have experience with latex yet though!
10) What could have been your most challenging photo shoot, to date? Is there a line that you won’t cross?
Probably was a borderline lesbian shoot with a girl I barely knew but it was pretty tame so I didn't have to set any boundaries. But I'm not into hyper-sexual shoots and stuff. I think an element of mystery is more fun!
11) Is there a thin line between your modeling personality and your own private life?
The line used to be thick, but since creating Nervosa and talking about mental health stuff I made the line a lot thinner. I am trying to create awareness and help others and in turn this helps me. I just decided, fuck it. I'm not hiding anymore! :)
12) Any chance of coming to visit us in Montreal soon?
In a year I hope to do some more travelling. :) And we will paint the town red you and i! I hope haha.
